Blog 7 - Streaky bay South Australia - Friday 10th July & Saturday 11th

This is the two guys playing with their satellite finders once
the lesson was over
Moose started the day with a paddle while I sat enjoying my book. When he returned he stuck his head in the door to say hi while at the same time, I noticed out of the window; two old guys looking concerned. I wasn't sure if the van was sticking out too much, or they were curious about the ski. So I suggested Moose see what was up. He looked at me like I was mad, all he wanted to do was wash down his ski then jump into a hot shower, but on turning around he saw the guys nervously sending enquiring glances his way. They decided between each other who was to ask the question. No words were used at this point just their eyebrows. On Moose’s friendly “Hi, how ya going?” One stepped forward, there was much mumbling then Moose pops back into the van to grab his little black box – the satellite finder. Turns out they couldn’t get TV even though they had a satellite dish and had noticed we didn’t seem to have a problem. So a prompt lesson on how to use the black box they had been sold as a “marriage saver” was swiftly started. Funny, Moose thought it amusing that the shop owner had called it a marriage saver yet I have often said to people “it saves marriages too” and he hasn’t noticed – maybe supposed to be a man joke not a Mrs joke?  I no longer have a man walking around in circles swearing trying to get a signal for his TV which is good but not as much fun, the last time Moose did it was in Walpole it was pouring with rain, thick heavy sheets of water emptying out of the sky and there was Moose yellow rain gear on, walking around with his “squealer – signal finder” trying to find the spot for his dish. It works by squealing while finding a signal but isn’t very sensitive to detecting obstructions like trees. I yelled out a couple of times “don’t worry about it”, he would look at me in disgust for suggesting giving up and walk around some more. He wasn’t amused when I was in fits of laughter when he came in drenched and swearing but happy he had signal. His new black box has a built in tv screen so it shows whatever program is on the channel of your tv set is on, or it doesn’t – making it a lot less guess work and as I said less fun for me.

Moose checking out the water conditions
After the lesson and a hot shower for Moose, we headed into the main street for some grocery shopping and a coffee. Those cupboards just can’t hold enough food for The Moose. Shopping completed I sent him off to the van with instructions to put the meat and dairy stuff away. I had originally asked him to put all the shopping away but this caused a little melt down as he couldn't possibly know where to put it. So Fridge and Freezer was an easier option. He was then going to lay on the bed and watch the Tour de France which is code for “have a nap”. I on the other hand had a look around the shops and the town then walked down to the bakery cafĂ© for another coffee – I'm not sure if this town has had a course in coffee making or the Nullabor has dulled my senses. I tried to book a massage next door at the natural therapy centre, with no luck, this was very disappointing because I am kinda broken. My frozen shoulder is not happy, my back is sore and my ankle feels like it’s about to explode. (Roisin, I NEEEEEED you).
Weather  conditions changing
Instead I drank my coffee and rang my mum and dad. Then texted Moose to pick me up but not before popping into the liquor shop for Red wine for a pie I want to make, Bailey deluxe chocolate drink for me and Port for Moose. Oh and picking a Vanilla slice up for him too. Yak and Tomas please note: SA is where you will find the BEST vanilla slices!
Back at the van I packed away the rest of the shopping and took Bonnie for a walk before relaxing with my book again. Bonnie is doing extremely well at sitting at the open door of the van without going outside unless she’s invited. She’s not doing so well at being left in the van alone and staying on her mat. We have caught her (even though she moves fast when she sees us) sitting on the table looking out the window!
our liquor supplies
Bonnie likes the heater too!
The heater was on full blast mode while we watched the evening shows on telly. Wind was blowing and curling around the van. Gum nut clusters banged noisily as they dropped upon the roof but nothing upset Bonnie as she moved her bed to curl around her and keep her warm. Dinner was the famous streaky bay fish and chips, eaten straight out of the butcher paper wrapping followed by a nice wee nip of Baileys to toast a lovely day.
As I closed the lid on my computer at 11.19 pm to prepare for bed, the heavens opened!

The weather set the pace. Gusts of wind and hail lashed at the van for short periods of time then bursts of sunshine. I sat in bed with the covers up to my chin sipping the coffee which was beautifully made, (honest) by Moose, waiting for our little electric heater to do its stuff. I love this little heater it makes me feel warm just looking at it’s pretend flames.

If it struggles we can click on the gas heater which blows hot air out of the vents under the bed (bonus it heats the bed as it does this) or the recycle one on the ceiling. Though when the latter one is on I feel colder as it seems to disturb the cold air around me rather than warm it up.

Bonnie was annoying Moose to take her outside – AGAIN. He had just brought her back in but I guess the wind moves scents around and she wanted back out there. Moose says she stands with her tail in the air, head held high sniffing then runs off in search of the source of whatever scent she picked up. As I wrote this, she was sitting making soft insistent sounds, similar to growling but not as threatening aimed at Moose who was sitting trying to read when that didn’t work she sat directly in front of him staring intently as if to send esp thoughts. He gave up and took her outside
And he says he doesn't spoil her!
. After a while they come back in and the whole thing starts again. So like a spoilt child she was invited onto his lap where she promptly fell asleep.
At the local butchers yesterday we picked up a stash of meat. Today I pulled out the “red wine marinated roast beef” out of the fridge. We may not drink much but we certainly like marinates. It was to be put in the baby Webber but weather conditions weren’t looking like making that an enjoyable experience for Moose so we went through different options from the oven to the Bessemer pot but finally decided to give the Crock pot (slow cooker) a go. I put the meat and the veg in at once. Figure the whole meal being cooked while I was enjoying the day was a good plan. Moose sorted his manuals for gadgets and van warranties and neatly stored them under the bed. So we both had nothing else on our “to do” list.

Blue skies one way & heavy grey the other
Bonnie was still restless so we threw on the heavy winter gear and headed out embracing the wind, hail and rain to find the bakery for lunch.
After succeeding in our mission and enjoying a very good pie and pasty  we headed started the walk back along the foreshore, the wind was picking up and Moose pointed to the heavy thick clouds picking up momentum as a heavy squall came our way.  Even though the sun was out we waited under the verandah of the old pub for it to pass us by. A brisk walk and we made it home relatively dry. Moose napped sitting up while Bonnie curled up on her mat.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing. The roast and vegetables in the crockpot (slow cooker) were delicious and had the added bonus of only being one pot to clean up.
